Sweet corn arepas are an iconic and beloved dish in Venezuela. With a soft texture and a delicate corn flavor, they are perfect for any occasion. This simple recipe allows you to prepare crispy exterior and tender interior arepas, which you can fill with cheese, ham, or enjoy on their own, accompanied by a sauce or stew.
Its preparation requires few ingredients and minimal time, making it a convenient option for breakfast, a snack, or a comforting treat, keeping Venezuelan tradition alive on your table.
Sweet Corn Arepas
Ingredients
250 grams of Sweet corn
300 milliliters of Water
150 grams of Corn flour
1 Beaten egg
Oil
1 pinch of Salt
Preparation
Step 1 : In a bowl, mix the corn flour and salt.
Step 2 : Next, add the beaten egg and warm water, and stir until you get a homogeneous dough.
Step 3 : Then, add the crushed sweet corn and continue kneading for a few minutes to well incorporate the ingredients.
Step 4 : It is recommended to let the dough rest for five minutes to improve its consistency.
Step 5 : Afterward, with your hands, form small balls with the dough and gently flatten them until they are between one and one and a half centimeters thick, forming round and soft arepas.
Step 6 : In a deep skillet, heat enough oil and fry the arepas until golden and crispy on the outside.
Step 7 : Once ready, place them on paper towels to remove excess oil.
Step 8 : These arepas can be optionally filled with fresh cheese, mozzarella, or ham, or served accompanied by stews or sauces, according to your taste.
